bolívar, bolivia, o—

good multi-part talk about bolivia and the politics of the south-west world.

1, US backs eastern secession in bolivia
2, what does santa cruz want?
3, when did the US “lose” latin america?

the ever annoying feature of coverage like this, still present. evo knows his people have a water problem and that the water problem is not theirs alone to solve. he thinks indigenous people around the world are ideally suited to help fight climate change and global warming pollution.

but he can talk all he wants about needing to meet the environmental challenges together — even to the left press, the topic of discussion is about whether local largeholders and the US will “let” autonomy go forward, as though autonomy is front and back of the current struggle.

what is the autonomy for? oh, you know, land redistribution, wealth sharing, democracy. the top issues before, now very much relegated to means to preventing a premature end via natural collapse.

but everybody’s stories’re stuck somewhere back there, a little after the spanish civil war, maybe, the crimes of the 1950s CIA. sittin’ on the tracks, with a heavy train rushing toward them, and they’re tip-tapping away at the trusty underwoods about how the old elites don’t let people choose their own fate.
